Yeast Infection – Causes and Preventive Measures

As has been mentioned in our previous blog, Yeast Infection is caused by the overgrowth of naturally occurring yeast in the vagina named as Candida albicans. Lactobacillusor the friendly bacteria control the growth of this yeast. But under certain conditions, when the amount of good bacteria goes out of balance, it subsequently affects the growth of yeast leading to infection.

    Causes

The imbalance which accelerates the growth of yeast can result from the following reasons:
    1.       Hormonal Imbalance: Hormonal imbalance, particularly imbalance in sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone can also cause yeast infection. Studies have shown that estrogen is directly linked with the growth of yeast.
    2.       Menstrual Cycle: Since sex hormones undergo change before and after menstrual cycle, it affects the growth of yeast often leading to infection. Because of low estrogen level, vaginal dryness increases. Dryness causes itchiness and dryness making vagina prone to more yeast infections
    3.       Stress: Stress and a lack of sleep also causes hormonal imbalance which not only causes PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) but also affects the health of vagina making it more susceptible to infections such as yeast infection.
    4.      Tight Clothes or Tight Underwear: Wearing tight clothes or tight underwear can affect the temperature of the vaginal area creating more heat and moisture. Yeast growth increases under such conditions.
    5.      Unhealthy Food: Eating lots of sugary items on regular basis can also disrupt the balance.
    6.      Weak Immune System: A weakened immune system prevents vaginal flora from controlling the growth of yeast.
    7.      Pregnancy: During pregnancy, estrogen level rises which stimulates the growth of yeast. Use of oral contraceptives and estrogen therapy can also cause yeast infection. It is very important to get yeast infection treated immediately during pregnancy. If it remains untreated, it can transfer to baby’s mouth during delivery.

    Preventive Measures

Eat Healthy: Candida diet helps reduce the chances of a yeast infection as it is based on low sugar food. Adding yogurt and other foods rich in probiotics in your diet also help maintain the balance of vaginal flora.   http://www.everydayhealth.com/hs/yeast-infection/yeast-infections-and-diet/
    ·         Wash from Front to Back: Wash yourself from front to the back so that germs don’t transfer from you anus to your vagina.
    ·         Wear Cotton Underwear or Go Commando: Cotton Underwear soaks moisture thus preventing its accumulation in vaginal area.
    ·         Avoid Douching: Using soaps, douches, and other over the counter feminine products lead to an imbalance of the vaginal flora. Soaps also cause dryness thus making vagina prone to injuries and infections.
Change Pads and Tampons More Often: A major cause of yeast infection is poorhygiene. Women who have chronic yeast infection should use pads instead of tampons to decrease the risk of infection
